August 18 to 22, 2021
Day 3, Lugo Alto
August 20, 2021
42. Foz
42. Foz
I leave Lorenzana bound for the Basilica of San Martiño in Foz. It is considered the oldest cathedral in Spain and dates from the 9th century. It has plant ornaments on the capitals and walls decorated with polychrome paintings, which are well preserved and some have been restored.
After seeing this basilica, I will go across the coast to visit
the beach of the Cathedrals. This beach has the characteristic of having rock formations on the sand that seem to make figures. It is visited by hundreds of thousands of people every year, so there is a capacity limit.
43. Ribadeo
43. Ribadeo
Continuing along the same road I arrived at
Ribadeo, one of the most beautiful fishing villages in Lugo, with a very unique square and palaces and incredible views of the sea and the estuary. In the town hall is the statue of Ibañez, a very popular character from the important town before the defeat of the French after the invasion of Spain.
Near the square is the convent of Santa Clara, a building dating back to the 11th century that has been damaged several times throughout history. Preserving the cloister and the 17th century church. It has had various uses since the 19th century, being a hospital and a hostel.
From there I will go to the sea seeing the marina, the boats and the different ships that pass along the coast. For this there is an elevator that goes up and down since most of the city is high up. From there I will pass by
the chapel of the Holy Trinity and the old cannons that defended the city. I will walk through the oldest streets seeing a famous house such as
the House of the Skate.
I also visited the street of the Indian houses where there are houses of people who made a lot of money in America two centuries ago and had the most extravagant houses built. Before leaving Ribadeo I visited the illa Pancha lighthouse at the end of the city with very nice views of the sea.
44. Lorenzana
44. Lorenzana
In the afternoon, already in
Lorenzana where I had my accommodation, I would visit the city. The most important thing is the
monastery of San Salvador. This monastery was founded in the 10th century by a certain Osorio, a direct descendant of a lieutenant of Don Pelayo. They called him the holy count and his remains are supposed to rest there. Precisely the highlight of the monastery is the façade of the church that is the precursor of that of the Cathedral of Santiago, with the central part and the identical window. On the other hand, the tomb is a Christian sarcophagus from the 5th century.
The monastery has two cloisters of different stages. The church is in the Baroque style and the neoclassical interior. All the precursors of the Romanesque and Gothic style would be modified. Currently it has many cracks that make the building need urgent reforms to prevent it from collapsing since it has slight inclinations on the floor.
After seeing the central square, visit
the Tovar fortress, an old stately palace. A building that was originally a defensive tower and over the years would become a stately residence.
